Kook, Avraham Yitzhak

Kook, Avraham Yitzhak
(1865-1935)
   Palestinian rabbinic scholar of Latvian origin. He was born in Greiva, Latvia, and served as rabbi of Zaumel and Bauska, before emigrating to Palestine in 1904. An ardent Zionist, he became chief rabbi of the Ashkenazi community in Palestine in 1921. He believed that the return to Palestine marked the beginning of divine redemption. His writings include Orot (on holiness in the newborn nation-alism), Orot ha-Teshuvah (on repentance), and Halakhah Berurah (on halakhic issues).
